Good food. Interesting science.
A little closer to the source.

Get to know Lion’s Mane and oyster mushrooms, from their place in the pan to what researchers are actually finding. The useful part isn’t the hype. It’s knowing what was tested, what happened, and what we still don’t know.

How to read the research
Ingredient illustrations, not photos of our harvest or a guide to foraging.

A study is a starting point.
Not a promise.

These are selected human trials, not an exhaustive review. We include mixed and negative results, link the original papers, and keep the limitations close to the findings.

People aren’t petri dishes. Cell and animal findings can suggest questions to study. They don’t establish a health benefit in people.

Preparation matters. A powder or concentrated extract is not automatically equivalent to fresh mushrooms in a meal.

Check the main result. A change in one test or an exploratory analysis isn’t the same as a clear overall benefit. Study amounts below are not recommended doses.

Hericium erinaceus

Lion’s Mane

Shaggy on the outside.
Tender in the skillet.

That pale, cascading fringe belongs to a tooth fungus, not a gilled mushroom. Its mild flavor and pull-apart texture make it a lovely ingredient for pan-fried slices and shredded fillings.

Research interest often centers on cognition and mood. Small human studies have produced signals worth following up, but the results are mixed. They do not establish that a serving of fresh Lion’s Mane improves memory or treats a medical condition.

Mori et al.

Human trial · 30 participants

An early signal in adults with mild cognitive impairment

The mushroom group had higher scores on one cognitive scale during the trial. Their scores declined after supplementation stopped.

What was tested & what to keep in mind
Design
Double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 30 Japanese adults aged 50–80 with mild cognitive impairment.
Preparation & duration
Tablets supplying approximately 3 g of dried mushroom powder daily for 16 weeks, followed by four weeks without treatment.
Limitations
A small, selected group and one cognitive scale. This does not establish dementia prevention, a treatment benefit for everyone, or the effect of eating fresh mushrooms.

Human pilot trial · 41 participants

One faster task, but a mixed overall picture

Participants performed faster on a Stroop attention task after a single dose. The reported stress difference after 28 days was not statistically significant at the conventional 0.05 threshold (p = 0.051). Other outcomes included no benefit and some unfavorable findings.

What was tested & what to keep in mind
Design
Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot in 41 healthy adults aged 18–45.
Preparation & duration
1.8 g of Lion’s Mane supplement daily, with testing after a single dose and after 28 days.
Limitations
A small pilot with multiple cognitive and mood measurements. A positive result on one task is not proof of a general cognitive benefit; the stress trend is not a confirmed effect.

2025

Surendran et al.

Human crossover trial · 18 participants

No overall cognition or mood improvement after one dose

The extract produced no significant overall improvement in the combined cognition or mood measures compared with placebo. One individual pegboard task improved.

What was tested & what to keep in mind
Design
Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study in 18 healthy adults aged 18–35.
Preparation & duration
A single 3 g dose of a 10:1 fruiting-body extract, tested 90 minutes later.
Limitations
A small, short-term experiment. It cannot settle the effects of long-term use, and its concentrated extract is not the same preparation as fresh Lion’s Mane.

Pleurotus ostreatus

Oyster mushrooms

Layered caps.
A very good place to start.

Our focus is Blue Oyster, part of the Pleurotus ostreatus group. Tender caps, savory flavor, and edges that brown beautifully make oysters an easy companion for garlic, noodles, tacos, and a roomy skillet.

Researchers have investigated oyster mushroom powders and their β-glucans, a type of fiber, in relation to metabolism. These studies report P. ostreatus, not our exact Blue Oyster strain. Findings from other species, such as king oyster (P. eryngii), are not interchangeable.

What the metabolic studies actually found

2022

Dicks et al.

Human crossover trial · 22 participants

A gut-hormone change, not a lower glucose response

The enriched meal did not reduce the blood glucose response, the main outcome. It increased the gut hormone GLP-1 and reduced free fatty acids and reported hunger over four hours.

What was tested & what to keep in mind
Design
Double-blind, randomized crossover study in 22 adults with impaired glucose tolerance. Published online in 2021; journal issue dated 2022.
Preparation & duration
One meal enriched with 20 g of oven-dried oyster mushroom powder, providing 8.1 g of β-glucans, compared with a meal without enrichment.
Limitations
A single-meal study in a specific group. A short-term hormone change is not evidence of diabetes treatment or lasting weight loss, and is not the same as taking a GLP-1 medicine.

Fortifying a meal with oyster mushroom powder beneficially affects postprandial glucagon-like peptide-1, non-esterified free fatty acids and hunger sensation in adults with impaired glucose tolerance: a double-blind randomized controlled crossover trial.

Johnen et al.

Human trial · 46 participants

No LDL-cholesterol reduction over four weeks

The oyster mushroom drink did not lower LDL cholesterol compared with the control drink. Other measured blood lipids also showed no treatment effect.

What was tested & what to keep in mind
Design
Double-blind, randomized controlled trial in 46 adults with moderately elevated LDL cholesterol.
Preparation & duration
A daily drink containing 8.4 g of oyster mushroom powder and 3 g of β-glucans, or a control drink, for four weeks.
Limitations
A short trial with a small group. A post-hoc analysis suggested changes in markers of cholesterol absorption, particularly in women; those exploratory findings do not overturn the negative main LDL result.

Food first.

Enjoy the ingredient.
Keep the claims in perspective.

Oyster mushrooms contribute dietary fiber and nutrients such as niacin, a B vitamin. Amounts depend on the species and how the mushrooms are grown and prepared.

The USDA reference below describes raw oyster mushrooms. It is not a nutrition label for our harvest, and it does not describe Lion’s Mane nutrition. A cooked dish also includes its other ingredients.

A few good things to know

In your kitchen

Cook mushrooms thoroughly. Refrigerate fresh mushrooms in breathable packaging, and clean them just before cooking. Avoid mushrooms you are allergic to. This is not a wild-mushroom identification guide.

When reading health claims

This page is educational, not medical advice. None of these trials establishes that Shroomtopia’s fresh mushrooms prevent or treat disease. For supplement, medication, or medical-condition questions, speak with a qualified clinician. Don’t change prescribed treatment because of a mushroom claim.
